From the opening notes of Get up and Dance, the Funkinsteins had the Fleece audience by the throat, and they shook them around and wrung them out. I have seen the Funk’s in a number of small venues around the city, and their show has always been lively, but Saturday night on the big stage with the Fleece’s big rig, they absolutely blossomed. Flat out from the word go, the girls (and boy), played a set that had the crowd on fire. A variety of sounds make up the Funkinsteins act but they are all welded together in such a way as to make the show one big sound experience. A real blast, and worth the entrance fee without the headline act. Keep up the good work Funkinsteins. Billy Bristol Music Live
I have a message board called Brooksider, (for people who used to like Brookside, but really hated it in the last five years - it's a specialist thing, obviously.) The two dozen or so of us that are left share muaic discoveries as well as talking randomly about any old thang. Here's what I posted tonight... Lordy, I've seen many many bands in my time, and most have been adequate. Some have been very good. Some have been a revelation. Go and see Funkinsteins. They are from Bristol and they kick ass. I cannot praise this outfit strongly enough. Go! Go now! Take my car!............... I shit you not. What a miracle to see someone who became my ambition . Who did exactly what I always wanted to do in my head, (demonstrate excellence on bass, and look extremely happy and cool whilst doing it). It was a shock. I always pictured myself playing like Leroy (Leigh) Gorman and looking like Annabella Lwin, simultaneously. Then I saw someone who'd done it. And done it well. Couldn't be happier, I feel like a proud big sister. I didn't have the talent or the confidence, bur I'm really pleased that someone did. Nice one. And the CD's fine. Kathy Jones Swansea

Funkinsteins provide an early afternoon wake up call by way of their authentic gospel/funk crossover. The Formidable lead singer s bombastic vocal performance, entwined with the trippy keyboards and hip hop beats, gave this band a real edge - hopefully they ll be higher on the bill next year . Playing a lively amalgamation of sheer funk and rock, the Funkinsteins are able to push their overwhelming charisma in the face of any audience. With their energy fuelled fusion of feel good tunes, it s an experience they are sure to enjoy. Imagine Jamiroqui mutated with Sylvester, playing at full pelt, and then turning up the volume, Now add stage conquering personalities and an infectious knack of songwriting and bass heavy arrangements. The Funkinsteins: "Charasmatic funk, rock, groove fusion" is the Funkinsteins description of their energy fuelled, live vibed,feel good music.
They've absorbed an abundance of funk in collective history,and it gels to near perfection on the six tracks offered here.
"America" is perhaps not the strongest opener, dispite the sassy vocals and guitars of Sally and Ellen, the slick funk bass from Alex, and Mike's nicely understated drumming antics.
Things really hot up with Milestones, a kind of Jamiroquai meets Brand New Heavies.Natty vocal harmonies and tight playing combine with an obvious writing and arranging skill in the Funkinsteins camp.
